Residential · Architectural Concrete
Floating concrete stairs — sculpted, structural, striking.
Cast-in-place architectural floating stairs. Engineered, formed and finished as a single sculptural element. The stair that holds its own as a feature in the room.
What we mean by "floating"
A floating stair appears to cantilever from a single wall or single spine, with no visible side stringers or under-supports. Each tread looks suspended in space. Achieving that look in concrete requires a buried structural element (usually a cantilever spine beam, or treads anchored deep into a structural wall) that's hidden in the finish.
It's one of the most visually striking architectural moves available in a home — and the most technically demanding concrete element we deliver.
How we approach it
- Engineering input is non-negotiable. We coordinate with your structural engineer from sketch design — the structural concept dictates everything that follows.
- Bespoke formwork. Floating stairs cannot be built from off-the-shelf form. We build custom formwork for each project.
- Single continuous pour where possible. A floating stair cast in one pour has no cold joints visible in the finish. Pour days are highly choreographed.
- Architectural finish from the form. The form face is your finish — there's no patching after the fact on a feature stair. Form quality is what determines the result.
Lead time and cost
Architectural floating stairs are not a quick job. From engagement to finished stair is typically 6–12 weeks depending on engineering, formwork fabrication and pour scheduling. Cost varies enormously by complexity — from around $25k for a simple 12-tread cantilever to $80k+ for a curved, multi-flight architectural feature.
Standards we work to

- AS 1170 — Structural design (cantilever loading)
- NCC stair geometry (rise, going, balustrade)

Common questions
What architectural finish can the stairs take?
Off-form Class 1 (smoothest), honed, or with coloured pigment full-depth. We don't recommend exposed aggregate on stair treads — it's rough underfoot.
Do you supply the balustrade?
No — we cast the cores or fixings for the balustrade as part of the stair. The balustrade installer (typically a steel fabricator or glazier) installs theirs after.
How heavy are floating stairs?
Heavier than they look. A 12-tread stair can weigh 4–7 tonnes. The supporting wall and footing have to be designed for that load.
